About Us

We are Alex and Marjorie Saveski. We met in high school and married in 2001. We currently reside in southeast Michigan, but have big dreams of one day living in the mountains. Passions we share include health and fitness, traveling to new places, and really good food! Our lives together have been a gradual evolution towards the primal lifestyle, which we fully embraced in October 2009. We hope to share what we have learned through our research and real life experience. Enjoy!

About Marjorie

For many years, I strived to be healthy and fit and to cook delicious and nutritious meals for my family and friends. I thought I was doing everything right – low fat and whole grains, regular cardio and weight training sessions, and pushing for perfection. About 3 years into a stressful management position at work, I developed low back pain. As a physical therapist, I was sure that I could “fix” myself.  I tried everything I used on my patients and did not see significant improvements. After 2 additional years of searching for answers, I was referred to a holistic physician and diagnosed with Adrenal Fatigue. Alex and I began the research process, which eventually led us to the primal lifestyle. The eating style fit within the protocol established by my physician, so I adopted it immediately. Over the course of about 6 months of treatment, and by following the advice found in two amazing books Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome by James Wilson and Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection by John Sarno, I am happy to say that I am now pain free and feeling better then I have in many years! My wish is share what I have learned with you, as so much of this information is not mainstream!

About Our Influences

Three books have strongly influenced how we are currently living our lives. The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson is the go to source for all things primal. From diet to exercise to lifestyle, he covers it all. We are not totally strict Primals though. Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price highlights the vibrant health achieved by isolated cultures around the world when they follow the axiom: “Life in all its splendor is Mother Nature obeyed.”  The other book which we rely heavily on is Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. She discusses proper preparation of many foods as developed by our ancestors and cataloged by Weston A. Price. Although this book discusses grain preparation, we choose to not partake in them for all the reasons discussed in The Primal Blueprint. We do, however, eat dairy products from raw, organic sources. Alex and I do not shy away from higher carb foods like sweet and regular potatoes, we just eat them in moderation and in balance with the rest of our diet. Our focus is not only on what we eat, but also how the items are prepared. This allows us to derive the greatest benefit and taste from the food source. We strongly feel these books are must haves for anyone seeking to reap the benefits of this lifestyle.

    Marjorie and Alex!
    This blog is wonderful. I did not know you had become so involved in the Primal Diet until Uncle Bill and Aunt Carol visited us this March. Your dad looks amazing. I hope he will inspire mine! I have bookmarked your site and look forward to getting your updates. We would love to have another reunion with all of the Irvines soon. Keep on blogging!

    Hey Marjorie, my name is Dave and I also live a paleo lifestyle. I came across your blog via your quote in the Iodine Crisis and would like to quote your blog in a blog I am doing on iodine. Obviously I will link back to your blog if that’s ok with you. I found your iodine story very interesting, particularly the part that iodine supplementation is probably needed in a paleo lifestyle as I have come to the same conclusion.
